Terms of Service for OwePay
Effective Date: August 24, 2026
Welcome to OwePay. These Terms of Service ("Terms") constitute a legally binding agreement between you ("User", "you", or "your") and Alferid Hassen ("we", "us", or "our"), governing your access to and use of the OwePay mobile application (the "App").
By downloading, installing, or using OwePay, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree to these Terms, please do not use the App.
1. Nature of the Service & Non-Financial Disclaimer
IMPORTANT NOTICE: OwePay is exclusively a personal bookkeeping, calculation, and reminder utility. OwePay is NOT a bank, credit provider, lending institution, financial intermediary, or money transmitter.
- No Money Processing: OwePay does not process, handle, store, or transmit real money, nor does it conduct financial transactions on your behalf.
- Informational Records Only: Debt records, repayment schedules, and notes entered into OwePay are created manually by you for personal informational and memory-aid purposes only. They do not constitute legally enforceable promissory notes, contracts, or legal debt instruments unless independently executed in accordance with applicable laws.
- No Financial or Legal Advice: The App does not offer financial, tax, or legal advice. You are solely responsible for managing your financial relationships.
2. Data Storage, Security & Backup Responsibilities
- Local-First Architecture: OwePay stores all your debtor records, amounts, and transaction logs locally on your device by default, secured with SQLCipher AES-256 database encryption.
- PIN & Device Security: You are solely responsible for safeguarding your 4-digit security PIN and device lock. If you lose access to your PIN or uninstall the App without an active backup, your locally encrypted data cannot be recovered.
- Backups & Cloud Sync: We strongly encourage users to regularly export their data (via CSV/Excel) or enable optional Cloud Backups. We are not liable for any data loss resulting from device damage, uninstallation, hardware reset, or lost encryption PINs.
3. Pro Features, Subscriptions & License Keys
OwePay offers optional premium features ("OwePay Pro"), including unlimited cloud backups, spreadsheet exports, advanced analytics, and ad-free usage.
- Ad-Free Access via Rewarded Ads: Free-tier users can earn temporary ad-free passes by choosing to watch rewarded video advertisements.
- Direct Pro License Activation: Pro access may be obtained through authorized payment methods (such as Telebirr or direct bank transfer) by activating an issued license key.
- License Validity & Device Binding: License keys are issued for the purchased term (e.g., monthly, yearly, or lifetime) and may be tied to your verified device identifier or authenticated cloud account.
- Non-Transferability: License keys are for personal, non-commercial use by the purchaser and cannot be resold, rented, shared, or redistributed.
- Refund Policy: Due to the digital and instant activation nature of Pro license keys, purchases are generally non-refundable once activated, except where required by mandatory consumer protection laws.
4. Third-Party Services and Advertisements
The App integrates third-party services to provide core functionality and monetization:
- Unity Ads: Displays non-intrusive advertisements in the free tier. Your interactions with ads are governed by Unity Technologies' policies.
- Supabase: Provides optional secure cloud backup storage and user authentication.
- Google Firebase: Delivers push notifications and anonymous diagnostic crash/analytics reports.
We are not responsible for the availability, content, or practices of external third-party services.
5. Acceptable Use & Prohibited Conduct
You agree not to:
- Use the App for any unlawful, fraudulent, extortionate, or predatory lending practices (including illegal usury).
- Decompile, reverse-engineer, disassemble, or attempt to derive the source code or cryptographic keys of the App.
- Attempt to bypass, forge, crack, or distribute unauthorized OwePay Pro license keys.
- Interfere with, disrupt, or burden the servers or networks connected to our cloud services.
6. Disclaimer of Warranties
OwePay is provided on an "AS IS" and "AS AVAILABLE" basis without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory.
To the fullest extent permissible by law, we disclaim all warranties, including but not limited to merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, calculation accuracy, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the App will be completely error-free, uninterrupted, or that return date reminders will always trigger on devices with aggressive battery-saving constraints.
7. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, in no event shall Alferid Hassen or any contributors be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including without limitation:
- Loss of financial funds, unpaid debts, or financial disputes between you and third parties.
- Loss of data, corrupted databases, or unrecoverable PIN locks.
- Missed calendar reminders or notification delivery failures caused by device battery optimizations or operating system restrictions.
8. Modifications to the App and Terms
We reserve the right to modify, update, or discontinue the App or any part of these Terms at any time. Material changes will be indicated by updating the "Effective Date" at the top of this document. Continued use of the App following any changes constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
9. Governing Law
These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Ethiopia, without regard to its conflict of law provisions.
